The General Surgery Department was established in 1962 and has grown alongside the only Grade A tertiary hospital in southern Hainan. General Surgery Ward II (Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, Spleen, and Vascular Minimally Invasive Surgery) became an independent department in 2017. It currently has 13 physicians, including 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master’s supervisors, 1 PhD holder, and 4 master’s degree holders. The department adheres to the principle of "patient-centered care," advancing specialization in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and spleen surgery while establishing and developing vascular surgery and pediatric surgery. The team employs a multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) approach, developing individualized and standardized treatment plans in line with the principle of “maximizing patient benefit”. The department serves as the vice-chair unit of the Hainan Anti-Cancer Association, the Hainan Medical Association Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Branch, the Hainan Medical Doctor Association Vascular Surgery Branch, and the chair unit of the Sanya Medical Association Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Branch. In addition to clinical work, the department is a national clinical drug research base and a national residency training base. It also undertakes teaching responsibilities for undergraduate and college students from Hainan Medical University and other medical institutions.
The department’s scope of practice covers the following five specialties:
1. Hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and spleen surgery;
2. Vascular surgery;
3. Pediatric surgery;
4. Hernia and abdominal wall surgery;
5. Radiofrequency ablation for solid tumors.
