Sanya Central Hospital (the Third People’s Hospital of Hainan Province), established in 1962 and previously known as “Hainan Province Agricultural Reclamation Sanya Hospital”, is one of the first five national 3A Grade hospitals in Hainan Province. It serves as a key medical center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical illnesses in southern Hainan. The hospital is recognized as an “Advanced Stroke Center” by the National Health Commission, a National Chest Pain Center, an International Emergency Rescue Network Hospital, and the Southern Hainan Infectious Disease Treatment Center. Additionally, it is the Provincial Center for the Treatment of Critical Maternal and Neonatal Conditions, as well as the leading institution in the development of the Sanya Chest Pain Center treatment system and the key member of the Hainan Provincial Pulmonary Embolism and Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention and Treatment Alliance. Sanya Central Hospital is designated as a National Base for Standardized Resident Training and a National Clinical Drug Trial Institution. It also serves as the Hainan Provincial Standardized Resident Training Base and the Provincial General Practitioner Training Base. The hospital has received numerous prestigious recognition, including being named a “National Civilized Unit” and selected as a pilot hospital for establishing modern hospital management systems. Furthermore, the hospital has been acknowledged for its leadership in the scientific fight against COVID-19, both as a pioneering team in pandemic control and as an advanced support team. It has also been recognized as an advanced collective in the fight against COVID-19 in Hainan Province.

In February 2016, following the reform of Hainan Province’s agricultural reclamation system, the hospital was placed under the direct management of the Hainan Provincial Health Commission. In December 2018, the hospital was transferred to the management of the Sanya Municipal Government and became a public institution at the departmental level, categorized as a Class II public institution. The hospital has 13 internal departments, with a total of 1,800 beds available, 1,286 of which are currently operational. The hospital employs 1,729 staff members, including 17 doctoral students (3 postdoctoral researchers) and 175 master’s degree students. It boasts 273 senior professionals, including 1 provincial expert, 1 municipal expert, 3 South China Sea Series talent members, and 6 “515 Project” talents. The hospital also employs 1 provincial B-level (Outstanding) high-level talent, 1 C-level (Leadership) high-level talent, 37 D-level (Top-notch) high-level talents, and 234 E-level (Other) high-level talents. Additionally, the hospital has introduced 49 external talents, including 12 provincial “Good Doctors”, 19 in-house recruited talents, and 18 flexibly recruited talents (including 10 “Outstanding Retired Doctors” from Sanya, 4 “Beijing Doctors,” 2 renowned medical experts, 1 chief expert, and 1 project assistance expert). It is a large-sale comprehensive 3A Grade hospital of integrated functionalities of medical services, teaching, research, emergency care, rehabilitation, and health management. Covering a floor area of 103,600 square meters, the hospital is equipped with 48 specialized outpatient clinics, 9 specialty outpatient departments, 6 disease-specific outpatient clinics, and 34 clinical departments. It also houses 15 medical technology departments and offers a 24-hour green channel in the emergency department. The hospital is the only medical institution in southern Hainan with provincial-level Grade I key specialties. The Cardiovascular Center is affiliated with the National Cardiovascular Medical Center at Capital Medical University Beijing Anzhen Hospital, and the Urology Department has established a Surgical Robot Training Center and joined the Clinical Research Network of Urology at Peking University First Hospital. The hospital has notable strengths in various specialties, including Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, Hematology, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Neonatology, Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and Burn and Plastic Surgery. These departments are leaders in southern Hainan and among the top in the province. As a National Clinical Drug Trial Institution, the hospital is registered with 25 drug clinical trial specialties and 23 medical device specialties, capable of undertaking clinical trials from phase 1 to phase 4.

The hospital is an affiliated institution for the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) project applications. Each year, it secures nearly thirty research projects from national, provincial, and municipal scientific research platforms.

The hospital is a National Base for Standardized Resident Training , with twelve specialized training bases, including General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesiology, General Dentistry, Radiology, and Ultrasound Medicine.

The hospital serves as a graduate training base for both Guangzhou Medical University and Hainan Medical University. It is also the affiliated Sanya Central Hospital of Hainan Medical University and a teaching hospital for Hunan Medical University. Currently, the hospital has 8 master’s degree supervisors from Guangzhou Medical University, 2 doctoral supervisors and 13 master’s degree supervisors from Hainan Medical University, as well as 119 part-time faculty members from Hainan Medical University and 129 part-time faculty members from Hunan Medical University. Each year, the hospital accommodates over 300 medical school interns.
