The Gastrointestinal (Hernia) Surgery Department is a key and rapidly developing discipline of the hospital. Established in 1962, it serves as a sub-center for the "China County-Level Hospital Tumor Minimally Invasive Technology Promotion Project," a national clinical drug trial base, and one of the hospital’s first national residency training bases for surgery. The department has 65 beds and 4 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 1 attending physician, and 3 resident physicians, including 1 PhD holder and 6 master’s degree holders. The nursing team consists of 2 associate chief nurses, 3 supervisor nurses, and 8 senior nurses. The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, complex abdominal surgeries, abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors, and pancreaticoduodenal tumors. It is particularly renowned for its expertise in sphincter-preserving surgery for low rectal cancer and complex abdominal surgeries, holding a leading position in the province. Routine procedures include laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, colorectal cancer surgery, and hernia repair. The department also handles acute and critical abdominal conditions in southern Hainan. Adhering to the principle of "patient-centered care," the department continuously improves its services to build a high-quality specialized discipline.
In education, the department is responsible for teaching undergraduate and college students from Hainan Medical University, Hunan University of Medicine, and other medical institutions. It maintains close collaborations with renowned hospitals such as the PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital), the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. In regional healthcare development, the department provides targeted support to Baoting People’s Hospital, Ledong County People’s Hospital, Ledong Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and Ledong Second Hospital, regularly conducting academic exchanges and talent training.
