The Pediatrics Department of Sanya Central Hospital (The Third People's Hospital of Hainan Province) was established in 1984 and has nearly 40 years of history, making it one of the earliest pediatric specialties in southern Hainan. Since its inception, it has been responsible for treating children's diseases in Sanya, surrounding cities, and even international cases.

After years of development, the Pediatrics Department of Sanya Central Hospital is now a pediatric professional base for national standardized training of resident physicians, a pediatric clinical trial professional base for the national drug trial base, a center for treating difficult and critically ill children in the southern half of Hainan Province, a provincial standard prevention, treatment, and publicity base for hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a member unit of the Rare Disease Alliance in southern Hainan, a member unit of the Hainan Branch of the Chinese Alliance for Hemophagocytic Syndrome, and also a key specialty of the hospital.

The main diagnosis and treatment scope of the Pediatrics Department includes the diagnosis and treatment of common and frequently-occurring diseases in various systems of pediatrics, such as respiratory, digestive, nervous, urinary, endocrine, immune, connective tissue, cardiovascular, and blood systems. It undertakes the treatment of severe infectious diseases in children and difficult, acute, and critically ill diseases of various organ systems. The Child Development and Behavior Center of the Pediatrics Department also conducts growth and development monitoring, treatment of microsomia, rehabilitation of children with brain injuries, and child psychological behavior consultation and intervention.

The Pediatrics Department is mainly divided into several major areas: the Pediatric Outpatient Department, the Pediatric Emergency Department, the Pediatric Inpatient Ward, and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The Pediatric Outpatient Department has multiple areas, including the General Pediatric Outpatient, the Child Development and Behavior Center, the Standardized Outpatient for Childhood Asthma, the Pediatric Outpatient Atomization Room, the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Room, the Pediatric Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy Room, the Pediatric Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Room, and the Pediatric Fever Clinic (set up when there is a medical need). The Pediatric Emergency Department is open 24 h a day and has a green channel for children's first aid. The Pediatric Inpatient Department has 35 beds, and the PICU has 8 beds.

The Pediatrics Department has a strong technical force, and the construction of sub-specialties is gradually being improved. There are a total of 51 medical and nursing staff in the whole department, including 21 physicians and 35 nurses. Among the physician talent team, there are 3 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, 7 attending physicians, and 5 resident physicians; among the nursing talent team, there is 1 associate chief nurse, 11 supervisor nurses, 15 senior nurses, 8 nurses, and 1 rehabilitation chief therapist.

The Pediatrics Department has always adhered to the synchronous development of medical treatment, teaching, and research, enabling the Pediatrics Department to make great progress in the three aspects of disease diagnosis and treatment level, clinical medical education, and clinical scientific research. As the earliest PICU in southern Hainan, it admits about 1,500 critically ill children every year. As a postgraduate training base, a resident physician training base, and a pediatric teaching and research section of a medical college, there are currently professional master's students in training. More than 20 standardized training physicians have successfully completed their training. It successfully completes the teaching tasks of medical undergraduate internships and clinical practice every year. The teaching staff of the Pediatrics Department have been rated as excellent teaching staff at the provincial and hospital levels many times and have performed outstandingly in the previous Resident Physician Skills Competitions and Teaching Staff Teaching Ability Competitions held in Hainan Province. As a pediatric professional base of the national drug clinical trial institution, it has undertaken more than 10 clinical drug trials and completed 5 scientific research projects approved by the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Provincial Health Department, and Sanya City.

The Pediatrics Department is equipped with a variety of life-support and diagnostic and treatment equipment. There are 6 ventilators, non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment, defibrillators, multi-function electrocardiogram monitors, hypothermia therapy equipment, oscillating sputum-discharging devices, micropumps, transfusion/infusion pumps, a pediatric hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a cerebellar electrical stimulator, a muscle stimulator, an infant radiant warmer rescue table, and other treatment equipment; there are bedside blood gas analyzers, pediatric fiberoptic bronchoscopes, bedside electrocardiogram machines, pulmonary function testers, exhaled nitric oxide detectors, infant laryngoscopes, bedside blood purification treatment equipment, and other inspection instrument equipment.

The nursing techniques in the Pediatrics Department are exquisite. The pediatric nursing team has won second and third prizes in provincial, municipal, and hospital-level intravenous therapy competitions many times.
