In May 1989, the dialysis unit was established within the Nephrology Division of the Neurology Department, equipped with 1 AK-10 dialysis machine and staffed by 3 medical professionals. By 1989, the Blood Purification Department became independent from the Neurology Department. From 1986 to 2004, the department routinely performed acetate dialysis, transitioning to bicarbonate hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, hemoperfusion, and high-low sodium sequential dialysis. It also introduced modified bedside hemofiltration, primarily for ICU patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), treating 108 cases. This breakthrough addressed the limitations of traditional dialysis and became a provincial-level research project, recognized as a promising renal replacement therapy. The department treated approximately 12,240 patients.

As of 2004, the department was equipped with advanced blood purification devices, including Swedish AK200ULTRA, AK200, and AK95 models, and a Swedish CWP61 water treatment system to ensure high-quality dialysis water. The team included 1 experienced chief physician, 2 doctors, and 4 dedicated blood purification nurses, providing 24/7 on-call services.

By 2012, the department expanded to cover over 500 m2, with 20 dialysis machines. The medical team included 3 physicians (1 resident physician, 1 attending physician, and 1 associate chief physician) and 8 nursing staff (6 supervisor nurses and 2 senior nurses). The department became a key dialysis treatment base for southern Hainan. The department offers personalized dialysis plans, performing various blood purification treatments for nearly 10,000 patients annually, with a bed utilization rate of over 95% and a rescue success rate of 95%. Services include hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, hemofiltration, continuous bedside blood purification, hemoperfusion, single ultrafiltration, peritoneal dialysis, heparin-free dialysis, ECG monitoring, defibrillation, CPR, arteriovenous fistula formation, deep vein catheterization, and critical care coordination. It also provides comprehensive nursing care, including long-term and temporary venous catheter care, arteriovenous fistula care, infection prevention, pain management, and psychological support. Moreover, the department performs over 7,000 dialysis sessions annually, demonstrating excellent efficacy in treating conditions such as uremia, acute renal failure, multiple organ dysfunction, immune-related diseases, and poisoning.

By 2024, the department will be staffed with dedicated blood purification specialists, including 2 associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician. The nursing team consists of 11 specialized nurses, including 1 associate chief nurse, 6 supervisor nurses, and 4 senior nurses. Additionally, there is 1 professional engineer on the team. The department is also equipped with 32 dialysis machines,

including advanced models such as the Swedish-made Gambro AK-200 and AK-200 Ultra, as well as Fresenius, Bellco, and B.Braun single-use hemodialysis machines, ensuring comprehensive treatment options to meet patient needs. The department routinely performs hemodialysis for renal failure, acute poisoning, severe water-electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disorders, and collagen diseases, with an annual dialysis volume exceeding 20,000 sessions. Specialized treatments such as hemoperfusion and hemodiafiltration have been increasingly integrated into routine care. To ensure clinical monitoring and medical safety, the department is also equipped with cardiac and blood pressure monitoring systems, as well as ultrasound-guided central venous access and fistula puncture techniques. The department has successfully treated a large number of patients with acute and chronic renal failure, accumulating extensive experience in reducing dialysis complications, improving the quality of life for dialysis patients, and extending dialysis longevity. As a key department for nosocomial infection control, the entire department strictly adheres to the disinfection and isolation system. Especially during the outbreak and normalization management periods of the COVID-19 pandemic, the department's leadership has continuously improved prevention and control measures to ensure dialysis safety and the safety of every individual.
