The Functional Examination Department was established in 1985. It is a comprehensive professional department integrating clinical practice, education, and scientific research. Through the professional technical division of labor, giving full play to its advantages, and achieving all-round development, it has trained a large number of comprehensive talents with excellent basic skills and proficiency in various new diagnostic techniques. It is a team with rich clinical experience and certain teaching and research experience.

There are 58 staff members in the department: 2 with senior professional titles, 6 with associate senior professional titles, 24 with intermediate professional titles, 6 with primary professional titles, 17 data entry clerks, and 3 nurses, forming a reasonable talent echelon. The department currently has 27 ultrasound consultation rooms (9 in the outpatient and emergency department and 18 in the inpatient department) and 5 electrocardiogram rooms. It is equipped with advanced examination instruments.

The department offers a comprehensive range of services. Its diagnosis and treatment level meet all the requirements for ultrasound examinations in a Grade A tertiary hospital. The main business areas cover prenatal screening, abdominal, superficial, cardiac, vascular, obstetric and gynecological, pediatric, musculoskeletal, interventional, bedside, intraoperative ultrasound techniques, and electrocardiogram. It has also launched a number of new ultrasound techniques, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, elastography, transesophageal echocardiography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound of the stomach and duodenum, neonatal cranial ultrasound, infant hip ultrasound examination, integrated carotid-cerebral vascular ultrasound examination, prenatal tertiary screening, gynecological pelvic floor ultrasound examination, musculoskeletal ultrasound, transrectal double-plane probe examination of the prostate and perianal abscess, and interventional ultrasound.

In 2020, it was rated as a standardized training base for resident doctors in the specialty of medical ultrasound. In 2021, it was granted the qualification to enroll master's degree candidates by Hainan Medical University. The department has strong technical strength and enjoys a certain reputation in the province in terms of clinical diagnosis and treatment, teaching, and scientific research.
