The Radiology Department of Sanya Central Hospital (The Third People's Hospital of Hainan Province) was established in 1962. Through the efforts of several generations, starting with only one X-ray machine at its inception, it has gradually developed into a provincial-level Class I key clinical specialty, one of the two provincial-level Class I key specialties in radiology in the province. In 2014, it was approved as one of the first batch of national resident doctor standardized training bases. It undertakes the clinical practice and education tasks of many medical colleges and universities. It is a clinical teaching hospital for Hainan Medical University and Hunan Medical College and a postgraduate teaching base for Guangzhou Medical University.

The Radiology Department is well-equipped with various advanced large-scale imaging devices, including 4 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, 7 whole-body computed tomography (CT) scanners, 7 direct X-ray imaging devices (DR), 1 digital gastrointestinal machine, and 1 molybdenum-rhodium dual-target X-ray mammography machine. It includes the world-leading United Imaging high-end research-type magnetic resonance uMR890 and the new-generation Siemens Force dual-source CT. A complete picture archiving and communication system (PACS) has been established, and the entire process of business work is digital and information-based, enabling efficient and high-quality services for patients and clinical departments.

Currently, there is 1 chief physician, 3 associate chief physicians, and 11 attending physicians in the Radiology Department, among whom 1 has a doctorate degree and 9 have master's degrees. There are 2 associate chief technicians and 12 chief technicians. They have rich clinical experience and advanced teaching concepts. The Radiology Department has been rated as an excellent rotation department and an excellent resident training teaching base of the hospital many times. It is the Vice Chair Unit of the Radiology Branch of the Hainan Medical Association and the Chair Unit of the Imaging Special Committee of the Sanya Medical Association. In recent years, dozens of scientific research papers have been published. More than 10 scientific research projects have been successfully applied for, approved, and completed. In 2014, it won several second-class Sanya Science and Technology Progress Awards. In 2016, the project Clinical Application Research of MDCT and MRI Multimodal Imaging Technology in Cardiovascular Diseases won the second-class Hainan Science and Technology Progress Award. The representative teams formed by the department have won first- and second-class awards in the provincial radiologist skills competitions many times.

The department offers a full range of examination items with strong technical strength. Its business scope almost covers all current radiological diagnosis and treatment items. It can not only perform various routine X-ray, CT, and MRI examinations, but also non-invasive coronary CTA and other CT angiography, CT virtual colonoscopy, CT organ perfusion imaging, CT spectral plaque component analysis, CT spectral urinary calculus component analysis, MR angiography, multiple functional imaging of various organs of the body, MR hydrography of the inner ear, biliary-pancreatic ducts, and urinary system, one-stop MR heart examination, MR "PET-like" imaging, etc. The Radiology Department has formed certain specialty characteristics and sub-specialty group systems such as neurology, cardiology, and chest, abdomen, musculoskeletal, and interventional radiology. It has carried out a variety of new technologies and new projects, providing strong support for the construction of the six major centers of the hospital, such as the Stroke Center and the Chest Pain Center.
