October 13, 2024, was the 11th "World Thrombosis Day". On the same day, the 2024 China VTE Prevention and Control Conference was held in Beijing. At the meeting, the evaluation results of the Twelfth Batch of the National VTE Prevention and Control Capacity Building Project were announced. Sanya Central Hospital (The Third People's Hospital of Hainan Province) was rated as an "Outstanding Unit in the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis". Wang Chao, Director of the Medical Affairs Department, represented the hospital to receive the honor on stage.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious disease, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It is characterized by high incidence, high disability rates, and high mortality. It is the third-largest cardiovascular disease killer clinically. In particular, the occurrence of in-hospital fatal pulmonary embolism has posed a potential risk threatening patients' recovery. The occurrence of venous thrombosis during patients' hospitalization almost involves all clinical departments and runs through all diagnosis and treatment activities from the patients' admission to discharge. Moreover, venous thrombosis is a preventable and treatable disease. Active and effective prevention can significantly reduce its incidence, and standardized diagnosis and treatment can significantly reduce its mortality rate.

In recent years, Sanya Central Hospital has actively responded to the national call, attached great importance to the work of the VTE prevention and control capacity building project, and regarded it as an important part of hospital quality management. It has continuously strengthened organizational leadership, improved the prevention and control system, and enhanced the prevention and control level. By strengthening discipline construction, talent cultivation, and increasing investment in informatization construction, the hospital has carried out full-staff training on VTE prevention and control knowledge, VTE risk assessment, early screening of high-risk factors and diseases, comprehensive prevention of VTE, and standardized treatment of VTE throughout the hospital. The hospital's VTE prevention and control capacity has been comprehensively improved, and VTE prevention and control has been implemented in an all-round and whole-process manner in diagnosis and treatment activities. The awarding of the title of "National Outstanding-Level Unit in the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis" to Sanya Central Hospital is not the end but a new starting point.

Taking this awarding as an opportunity, the hospital will continuously promote the in-hospital VTE prevention and control management, closely focusing on the requirements of the national medical quality and safety improvement goals and the construction requirements of the VTE prevention and control system. With the General Surgery Department Ward 2 (Vascular Surgery) as the leading department, it will continuously promote the scientific, standardized, and standardized construction of VTE prevention and control, effectively do a good job in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of medium-and high-risk patients, improve the VTE prevention and control level, improve medical quality, and ensure medical safety, enabling the masses to enjoy high-quality medical and health services at their doorstep.

Let's learn about the relevant knowledge of venous thromboembolism (VTE) together.↓↓↓

What are the hazards of deep vein thrombosis?

Thrombosis is a "hidden killer" lurking in our lives. It can occur at any age and at any time, seriously threatening life and health. Thrombotic diseases can be divided into arterial thrombosis and venous thrombosis. Arterial thrombosis mainly includes cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and peripheral arterial diseases. Venous thrombosis mainly refers to venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Among them, the incidence rate of venous thrombosis is four times that of arterial thrombosis. Once a thrombus forms, it will slow down or block the normal blood flow, and may even break off and move to other organs, leading to serious consequences. If deep vein thrombosis is not effectively treated in the early stage, it may lead to limb swelling, pain, ulcers, and post-thrombotic syndrome. Once pulmonary embolism occurs, it is often very dangerous.

What are the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis?

Venous thrombosis often occurs without any warning signs. Once a patient shows symptoms, it indicates that deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) has occurred. Pain, swelling, redness, and warmth of the limb, elevated body temperature, unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, rapid heart rate, mild loss of consciousness, or fainting may all suggest the occurrence of VTE. If symptoms appear, seek medical attention promptly.

How to deal with deep vein thrombosis?

1. Contact medical staff and go to the hospital for treatment immediately; 2. Pay attention to bed rest, elevate the affected limb, and avoid excessive movements during activities in bed. Hot compress and massage are prohibited, and keep the stool unobstructed; 3. After diagnosis, receive drug or surgical treatment. People with high-risk factors, especially those with a family history of venous thrombosis, should take the initiative to undergo venous thrombosis examinations as long as conditions permit.
